Students connect to green careers in new Benicia High School ECH₂O Academy
BENICIA - Students at Benicia High School will join a new ECH₂O (Energy, Carbon, Water) Academy next school year designed to give them the knowledge and skills to succeed in environmental resource management careers. The ECH₂O Academy is being funded by a grant from the California Department of Education’s California Partnership Academies .

Polly Farina, Benicia High School Career and Technical Education (CTE) business teacher, is very excited about the ECH₂O Academy. “In this challenging time for education in California, we are extremely excited to offer Benicia High students this new opportunity,” stated Farina. “By connecting academic and hands-on career technical classes with emerging careers, this new Academy will make education relevant and exciting for students and staff.”

The three-year ECH₂O Academy will teach students about energy and water auditing and conservation, water treatment and alternative energy using biofuels. According to several government and industry reports, these are projected to be some of the fastest growing occupations in California.

Benicia High School principal Gary Jensen said the school’s staff, school district, and business community are truly excited. “The Academy will prepare our young people in a career pathway involving environmental resource management,” said Jensen. “The job outlook for this area is escalating at an high rate as everyone tries to do their part in going green.”... The School Board approved the document last night and now we are awaiting our visit from the WASC visiting committee on March 25th. Please see the attached document that will be reviewed by the committee when they visit our high school in March. Two members from the original visiting committee will return to review the progress of Benicia High School since the last full self-study in 2007.

No New Cuts to Education equals
$2.4 Million Loss for BUSD

The Governor has presented his Budget Proposal for 2010-2011. This proposed budget will result in devastating losses for BUSD! Based on our previous financial projections, we anticipated a need to reduce $1.2 million for the upcoming year. With the Governor's proposal we will be forced to make at least $2.4 million in reductions for 2010-2011. This is in addition to the $1.6 million in reductions last year.

This is a critical time for parents to get informed. The changes that are coming will affect every child in BUSD. Please become informed and let your voice be heard. Click on this link to provide input on the reductions, and be sure to attend one of the forums.
