Benicia High School, founded in 1892 as one of the first public high schools in California, occupies forty-seven acres west of the downtown area and serves approximately 1700 students in grades 9 through 12. The school has earned the California Distinguished School award for exemplary performance in 1992 and 1996. 196 students have been identified as GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) students as of March 2009. Over 87% of our most recent graduates plan on continuing their education by entering a university, community college or technical program. A 2007 California Department of Ed report noted that 42% of BHS graduates graduted with UC/USC required courses compared to the state total of 35.5%


BHS provides many programs and services to address the academic, social, and emotional needs of its students. The school is a learning community where students are held accountable to rigorous academic standards. Benicia High conducted a WASC self-study in 2006-07 and was granted the maximum accreditation term of six years.


Benicia High School students have consistantly scored high marks regarding the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) - BHS Seniors in 2008 scored above the national average in all three areas of critical reading, mathematics and writing. The students earn high marks on the CST, SAT II, AP test, ACT, and the California High School Exit Exam results. BHS has a dropout rate of just 3.3% for the 2007-08 school year.  


Benicia High School offers 43 athletic teams and participates in the six school Solano County Athletic Conference of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section. The award winning Panther Marching Band participated in the 2001 and 2005 Rose Parade. The drama department sponsors a fall drama production and spring musical each year. BHS student have the opportunity to participate in 23 active clubs, several which are service-based.
